Pre-Professional Academy

Pre-Professional Dance StudentThe Pre-Professional Daily Academy prepares students for professional dance careers with training by former professional classical ballet dancers. Students are assisted with preparations to audition for ballet company schools.

For the most serious dance student, the Pre-Professional  Academy (PPA) provides over 20 hours per week of training in ballet, pointe, variations, repertoire, boys’ virtuosity, pas de deux, dance history, music appreciation, modern theatre dance, musical theatre, broadway dance and contemporary ballet.  Students begin at 1pm daily for 2.5 hours of highly specialized training, then join the after-school students in their afternoon and evening classes.

PPA students perform in The Nutcracker and the Annual Performances, as well as community events throughout the year such as collaborations with Calvin Dyck’s Abbotsford Youth Orchestra and Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra.

PPA students have an exceptional opportunity to be trained by an international staff of former professional dancers from:

  • Randolph Academy of Performing Arts
  • Rambert School of Contemporary Dance (London, UK)

Acceptance into the Pre-Professional Academy is by audition, following submission to FVAD of the Pre-Professional Application, which also includes information such as assistance for school selection and information on the commitment required for the program. Minimum RAD Intermediate Foundation Ballet or equivalent.

The following classes are a sample of those attended by our Pre-Professional Academy Students between 1pm and 3:30pm.  After 3:30pm on weekdays, and on weekends, PPA students join the vocational students at their level in our after-school classes.

Academy Ballet - Adage & Port de BrasOpen ballet class concentrating on adage and port de bras based on Vaganova Academy / Royal Ballet School syllabus.
Academy ChoreographyChoreography class offering students first-hand experience working and rehearsing with a choreographer.
Academy VariationsVariations class learning solos from the classical ballets.
Boys' BalletBoys only ballet class with Mr. Carney
Boys' VirtuosityBoys only ballet class with Mr. Carney
Stretch-StrengthStretch-Strength class incorporating Russian gymnastique. Excellent for injury prevention or recovery, as well as flexibility, stamina, balance and basic dance technique.
Body ConditioningImprove muscular strength and endurance using functional exercises to increase cardiovascular stamina, improve stability and strengthen balance.
Health & NutritionStudents will learn various aspects of health & nutrition, including basic nutrition for dancers and athletes, how the body processes food, and the importance of organic diets, traditional medicines, physiotherapy, and massage therapy for stamina and injury prevention.
Music AppreciationStudents will learn the music, composers and orchestrations that inspired the classical ballets.
Dance HistoryStudents will become familiar with the major classical ballets, companies and schools while learning the history of dance. They will connect classical ballets with famous dancers, choreographers, composers and directors.
A Dancer's LifeStudents will understand of the dedication, focus, intensity and challenges in the life of a dancer, by studying biographies of classical dancers and learning the inner workings of the schools and companies those dancers attended.
