Karrie Hill
Miss Karrie was trained in England, receiving teaching certificates in ISTD Ballet, Tap and Modern Theatre dance, as well as a Bachelor’s of Education and Special Ed Diploma. She directed her own school for several years before emigrating to Canada.
Miss Karrie has taught for us in the past, and we are so thrilled that she is now able to join our staff several days each week to teach ballet and modern theatre dance.
For those who are unfamiliar with ISTD Modern Theatre dance, it is a wonderfully rich, diverse and dynamic syllabus that was originally developed to prepare dancers for the highly varied work involved in musical and theatrical productions, particularly in the West End and on Broadway. It was also the basis for our Musical Theatre School which ran from 2015 to 2020.
Modern Theatre dance is a rhythmic dance style rooted in musical theatre, which originated in America. It is often seen in musical productions and is known for its dynamic theatrical qualities. The style uses travelling steps, high kicks, leaps and turns which all need strength and flexibility. Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing Modern Theatre also incorporates jazz, lyrical and contemporary dance styles into its examination syllabus. Modern Theatre Dance defies a single permanent definition. This is largely due to its ability to adapt, develop and evolve with the changing fashion in dance.
